Varnierfanniere cuveestdenis

Champagne, Cuvée St. Denis NV

Varnier-Fannière

Not only a magnificent Champagne, it is also an ASTONISHING VALUE, and if I only bought one single wine from this offering, it’d be this one. Formerly a monocuvée from a parcel called Clos du Grand Père, it is now a combination that includes 30% from Pierre Vaudon, which sits on the plain to the south of Avize. Grand Père is affected with fan-leaf and much of it needs re-planting. The vine age is still around 50, the wine is 40% 2011 and 60% 2012, and it seems creamier than usual; discreetly mineral beneath a featherquilt of richness; both hedonic and detailed. I’m thinking this is a serious player among the icon-wines of the Côte des Blancs. (Terry Theise, importer)

Reviews

  • "95 points. The NV Brut Cuvée St. Denis emerges from a single parcel of old vines in Avize. A rich, vinous Champagne with gorgeous savory and mineral overtones, the Cuvée St. Denis boasts fabulous resonance and texture. Layers of fruit build to a vivid, breathtaking finish as this voluptuous Champagne shows off its considerable personality. This is the purest essence of old-vine Avize Chardonnay. Simply put, I can't recommend the Cuvée St. Denis highly enough. Readers who can find it should not hesitate, as it is a real head-turner. The current release is 60% 2009 and 40% 2008. Disgorged June 2014. Dosage is 7 grams per liter." (vinous)
  • "92 points. A vinous style, offering malt, honey, citrus and mineral flavors. Rich and dense in texture, with creaminess offset by lively acidity, followed by a long aftertaste of roasted nuts. Shows loads of personality." (Wine Spectator)
