Carlisle syrah sierramar

Syrah, Sierra Mar Vineyard 2014

Carlisle Winery

This vineyard lives down the road, just south of its older sibling, Rosella’s, but exhibits the feral and rustic qualities imparted by elevation, thin soil, and a warmer microclimate. The wine introduces itself with hard candy, violets, ruby red grapefruit and lavender on the nose. The pluot and cassis characters on the palate yield to a bacon fat quality that is strongly reminiscent of the “Honey-Lavender Bacon” from our local butcher (good stuff!). Fine-grained tannins on the finish, but this is a wine of depth and intensity that could find its true “happy spot” with some proper cellaring. Drink 2019 – 2027.

Reviews

  • "95 points. Even better, the 2014 Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard might be the top Syrah out of this vineyard. Also inky and glass-staining, it offers killer notes of caramelized plums, smoked meats, licorice, cassis and pepper in a full-bodied, ultra-pure, elegant package. I love its mid-palate and this total blockbuster will knock your socks off over the coming decade or longer." (Wine Advocate)
  • "93 points. Impeccably structured and focused, with blackberry, smoky meat and licorice aromas and complex flavors of herbes de Provence, stony mineral and pepper. Drink now through 2028. 324 cases made." (Wine Spectator)
