Reviews

  • "98 points. One of the most impressive Syrahs from Washington is Smith's The Hidden, which comes all from the Northridge Vineyard on the Wahluke slope. The 2012 Syrah The Hidden Northridge Vineyard certainly doesn't disappoint and has jaw-dropping good notes of black and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, lavender and smoked meats that flow seamlessly to a voluptuously textured, full-bodied, still young and yet evolved Syrah that will benefit from short-term cellaring, and have 15 years or more of overall longevity. This is truly spectacular." (Wine Advocate)
  • "94 points. (from limestone and basalt soil above the flood plain; planted at high density in 1998 with four clones that are co-fermented): Bright, deep ruby. Wonderfully perfumed, musky aromas and flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, white pepper, allspice, crushed granite and dark chocolate. Concentrated, layered and pliant, with a hint of raw meat bringing the wine an Old World touch. Finishes very long, with serious building yet edge-free tannins. Really superb fruit here, not to mention outstanding incipient complexity. The yield here was barely two tons per acre, according to Brennon Leighton, who noted that the vines are planted to a density of 3 feet by 6 and produced about 2.2 pounds of fruit per plant. Leighton referred to this wine as "one of our four kings, along with Hustler, Cattle King and Royal City," by which he meant flagship wines from their respective appellations." (vinous)
