Carlisle papera

Zinfandel, Papera Ranch 2013

Carlisle Winery

Beautiful medium-dark to dark garnet-red. Hi-toned, penetrating aromas of framboise liqueur with a touch of savory herbs. On first sniff, our much-lauded 2007 Papera Ranch Zinfandel comes to mind. But on the palate, this wine has better balance than the 2007 and reminds me more of our lively 2011. In fact, that describes this wine perfectly, a hypothetical blend of 2007 and 2011. But if you haven’t had those earlier vintages, in a nutshell, think intense red berry fruit, a full-bodied texture, and perfectly balanced alcohol and acidity. For my palate, perhaps our finest Papera to date. Drink from release through 2023.

Reviews

  • "93-95 points. As always, the 2013 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is one of the silkiest, most polished wines in the range. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, tobacco and mint build in an effortless, gracious wine long on class and personality. The Papera includes a small amount (4%) of Carignane, which, hard as it seems to believe, really makes a difference in the wine's character and feel. Papera, one of Sonoma's heritage sites, was planted in 1934." (vinous)
  • "92 points. The dark ruby/purple-tinged 2013 Zinfandel Papera Ranch (802 cases and 15.3% alcohol) comes from a vineyard planted in 1934. This wine has a big sweet kiss of black cherries and a somewhat monolithic mouthfeel, but with coaxing starts to offer up ripe strawberry, damp earth, wild mulberry and briary mountain berry notes. The wine is chewy, with good acidity and freshness and should drink nicely for at least a decade." (Wine Advocate)
