Carlisle zinfandel

Zinfandel, Carlisle Vineyard 2013

Carlisle Winery

Medium-dark to dark ruby-red. An intoxicating mélange of red mulberry, cassis, tobacco, and freshly tilled loam exudes from the glass. A touch of blood orange as well. Very appealing. On the palate, perfect balance with a silken texture. Gentle tannins emerge on the mid-palate and carry through the lengthy finish. Classic Russian River Valley old-vine Zinfandel. This wine is very enjoyable now but should continue to develop for several more years. Drink from release through 2021.

Reviews

  • "94 points. The 2013 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard, from the home vineyard planted in 1927 by another Italian immigrant, is a 701-case cuvée tipping the scales at 15.3% alcohol. The wine is 87% Zinfandel and 13% mixed black and white varietals. (Mike Officer has 30 different varietals planted in this vineyard.) Only about 20% new French oak is used, and the wine bottled unfined and unfiltered. Loads of black raspberry, kirsch liqueur, lavender, licorice and subtle earthy notes are all present in this multidimensional, full-bodied, gloriously decadent and tasty Zinfandel. Drink it over the next decade." (Wine Advocate)
  • "92-94 points. The 2013 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard brings together all the best elements of the house style. Huge and explosive on the palate, the Carlisle is wonderfully complex, with notable depth and power. Dark red cherries, wild flowers, tobacco, menthol and licorice blossom as the 2013 shows off its personality. This site, which was planted in 1927, is mostly Zinfandel. The blocks Mike Officer uses contain an estimated 39(!) other varieties, both white and red, all of which are represented in this blend." (vinous)
