• “This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc is arguably among the most hotly anticipated new releases in years, and the local watering holes, chat rooms and our old friend, Robert Parker, have been eagerly awaiting its arrival, ever since word got out that Martha McClellan had a new winemaking project in the works. Martha is best known for her past work at Harlan Estate, Blankiet and Sloan, as well as the joint label she makes with her husband, Bob Levy: Levy & McClellan. Now, in this second released vintage, the buzz is out. Jaw-dropping doesn’t begin to describe the level of quality, care and love committed to this project.” (ACME Fine Wine, St. Helena)

Basic Info

CHECKERBOARD VINEYARDS is located on the Southeastern slopes of Diamond Mountain at the Northern end of the Napa Valley. The 300 acre estate has five vineyard developments, each with its own elevation, exposure, and soil composition. The estate vineyard development areas are connected by a two and one half mile drive from the Valley floor to the Ridge of Diamond Mountain through dense forests of Redwood, Douglas fir, Madrone and Oak. The vineyard was originally planted forty years ago to Chardonnay, then replanted in 2001 with a combination Cabernet Sauvignon as well as small Merlot and Petit Verdot blocks. The five estate vineyards range from 600 to 2100 feet in elevation. The fruit is carefully nurtured from this rich landscape and masterfully transformed by Winemaker Martha McClellan (Harlan, Sloan, Blankiet, Levy-McClellan).
